This presentation will focus on the institutional environment of collegiate jazz programs – the creative ecosystems in which jazz programs exist inside colleges and universities. The study mapped the creative ecosystems of jazz-degree-granting-institutions to better understand internal factors for jazz programs’ success and while offering a novel method for future research.

ABOUT JUSTIN HUNTER
Justin R. Hunter is an ethnomusicologist and educator at the University of Arkansas. He received his PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and has an active research agenda on American music traditions including folk and jazz education.
ABOUT JAKE HERTZOG
Dr. Jake Hertzog is an award-winning guitarist, composer, songwriter, and educator. He has released nine albums ranging from jazz to rock, to classical, and performed with luminaries from the jazz and rock worlds. Hertzog’s academic research focuses on higher music education and music ecosystems.
