Dear JEN friends,

It is a pleasure to greet you as your new JEN President. I am both honored and humbled at the opportunity to serve our organization and promise to dedicate myself to building the jazz arts community by advancing education, promoting performance, and developing new audiences.

I want to acknowledge Andrew Surmani for his leadership and wisdom as our President these last two years. During this time period JEN has made great strides. I also want to cite the ongoing vision and insight from our Co-Founders and first Presidents Mary Jo Papich and Lou Fischer. It is remarkable to experience the growth JEN has made under these leaders, our Board members and so many of you since our inception a mere six years ago.

We thank our outgoing Board members Paul Bangser, Lou Fischer and Darla Hanley for their service and dedication. Looking forward, we welcome our new Board members, Tim Fellow, Dan Gregerman, and Tony White, as well as our newly elected President-Elect, Caleb Chapman, and Vice President, Bob Breithaupt. We also welcome Monika Herzig back to the Board in her second term as Secretary, Lou Fischer as our part-time Operations Administrator, and Andrew Surmani as he transitions to Past-President. Together with all of you, we look forward to serving those who love jazz as performers, educators and enthusiasts.

I invite you to join us at our 6th Annual JEN Conference in San Diego on January 7 – 10, 2015. We have a stellar line up that will be announced soon. Early registration is now open and our conference hotel, the Manchester Grand Hyatt, is now booking rooms.

Our conference theme is Outreach: Sharing the Gift of Jazz. One of the aspects I love about JEN is the spirit of volunteerism. With no full time employees we have accomplished wonderful things and we are just getting started. We invite you to reach out and get involved. You can offer to be on one of our committees, help with projects, and/or volunteer your services at the conference or in your own community. We hope you will embrace this concept as we celebrate the universality of the jazz language!

charlotte lang

Swiss/Dutch saxophonist Charlotte Lang was born in 1996 in Basel and studied the bachelor and master program at the JAZZCAMPUS Basel under the guidance of Domenic Landolf and Daniel Blanc. She is currently studying the Master of Music in Global Jazz at the Berklee College of Music in Boston under the artistic direction of Danilo Pérez. In addition she is part of Terri Lyne Carrington’s Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.

 

From 2015 to 2018, Charlotte she was a member of the Swiss National Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Christian Muthspiel. Since 2020, she became a member of the German National Youth Jazz Orchestra (Bundesjazzorchester Deutschland), under the direction of Niels Klein and Ansgar Striepens. She also plays is the Austrian FJO (Frauen Jazz Orchester→Women Jazz Orchestra of Austria).

 

In 2021, Charlotte founded her own Quintet the „Charlotte Lang Group“, for what she is composing, arranging and booking. In the fall 2023, her first album will be recorded and hopefully released by a renowned label.

 

Charlotte plays in the “Swiss Jazz Orchestra” and the “Zurich Jazz Orchestra”, the two professional Big Bands of Switzerland.

Charlotte recently got the unique opportunity to write a monthly blog for the Swiss Jazz & Blues Magazine called JAZZTIME, to tell readers about her time at abroad and specifically her time at Berklee. Her graduate program lasts only until the summer of 2023. She hopes to stay in the United States to enlarge her network and build her musical career.
